About Lower Town

Lower Town is the oldest neighbourhood in Ottawa, and is located just east of the downtown neighbourhood. It is located just north of the exciting Rideau Street, posh Sussex Drive and scenic Ottawa River, with the vibrant Rideau Canal to the west, and the Rideau River to the east. This part of Ottawa is just surrounded by gorgeous city water features and cultural epicenters of Ottawa. Lower Town includes the commercial Byward Market area and the house types here are a varied and charming mix of predominately apartments in low-rise buildings, duplexes and triplexes in heritage buildings, all with their own character. Along Charlotte Street and Range Rd there are a plethora of embassies, as well as the gorgeous Strathcona Park.

Lowertown's diverse population makes it one of the city's more interesting neighbourhoods. Its main stretch along Rideau Street is very bustling and includes many African, Asian, South Asian, Caribbean, and Lebanese businesses, a large grocery store, the Rideau Branch of the Ottawa Public Library, and an Orthodox Jewish synagogue.

Living in Lower Town means that you will be right next to the excitement of downtown, just tucked away enough to avoid having the hustle and bustle right at your front door. This location is ideal for those who crave the city life and wonderful amenities living downtown have to offer. Stop off at your favourite café, show venue or bistro on your walk home from work. Shopping at the Rideau Centre and the multitude of upscale and affordable shops along Rideau Street, as well as hitting up all of the eclectic shops and food stores in the ByWard to spend a weekend day in your new neighbourhood.

You could also visit Ottawa’s main nightlife district just a short walk away, and visit one of the many late-night food shops on your way home for the perfect way to cap off an evening. There really is no shortage of vibrancy and excitement living in Lower Town for the Ottawa urbanite.
