About Byward Market

The Byward Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. Established by Lieutenant Colonel John By in 1826, this neighbourhood was developed to accommodate a large public market and gathering place for residents. Within an area roughly five blocks square, you'll find museums, cafés, specialty food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair & aesthetics salons. In Ottawa, the Byward Market is synonymous with shopping and nightlife. A five-block area around the market provides the densest concentration of eating places, bars and nightclubs in the National Capital Region. The areas beyond this zone also offer boutiques and restaurants in abundance, and are frequented by a considerable number of buskers (street performers).

There has been a strong growth in residential efforts in recent years, opening the neighbourhood as a commercial, industrial and residential hub of Ottawa. This area has mostly apartments and condos to offer small families, singletons, retirees looking to downsize or young professionals a vibrant and truly urban living experience.

Easily accessible on foot, by transit or by car, this area of Ottawa offers a unique and convenient lifestyle for all.

Schools serving this area:

  • Lisgar Collegiate Institute
  • Elgin Street Public School
  • Viscount Alexander Public School

A cool feature of this neighbourhood:

The market itself is Canada's oldest continuously operating farmers' market, regulated by the City of Ottawa's Markets Management group, offering fresh produce in the summer months.

If you’re currently shopping around for a home in the Capital City of Ottawa, you are going to love what the Byward Market has to offer.
